Phần 1

Sevilla có nhiều nhà hát cho nhạc Flamenco vào những buối tối.  Ai ghé qua Sevilla thì phải đi xem 1 lần cho biết nhạc flamenco.  Flamenco là nhạc của tụi Gypsy cho nên những người múa và hát theo những nỗi khổ và buồn của cuộc sống hàng ngày, của những sự phân biệt giữa họ và những người dân khác.  Nhạc Flamenco nói chung là nguồn gốc và ảnh hưởng của nhiều thế hệ và dân tộc như Moorish, Jewish, Gypsy và Western European.  Kết hợp nhiều loại nhạc sáng chế ra điệu flamenco mà vùng Sevilla cũng xem như là thủ đô của nhạc Flamenco.

Irene

Irene hurricane

Irene is pounding Washington DC area with high wind and lot of rain.  With the most of it comes from tonight to Sunday morning, then Irene will heading toward New York city and other cites along I-95.   So far the North Carolina coast, where the hurricane made landfall, has been the most affected and damaged.  Here in Washington DC metro, it has a lot of rain and winds; a few trees fell down and some people were without power.

What an eventful week, there was an earthquake at the beginning of the week and a hurricane to end the week.  It’s not everyday that we get two apocalypse events.

Manha De Carnaval

There are many arrangements of Manha De Carnaval (Morning of the Carnival).  It was written by Brazilian composers Luiz Bonfá and Antonio Maria, and it was made famous in the movie Orfeu Negro.  This is one of the many songs considered an important starting point for the Bossa Nova gaining popular in the USA.  Many of the greatest players of Jazz/Bossa Nova have performed this piece and making it one of the most recorded song.

Most of the arrangement of Manha De Carnaval is too jazzy sound, and it’s nothing wrong with that since its is based on Bossa Nova.  However, I prefer more of a brazilian sound arrangement with a more freely open and easy-going.  My favorite is Baden Powell arrangement, it has a brazilian favor to it.  Of course lately anything playing by Baden Powell becomes my favorite and want to learn.   Baden Powell’s version.   Amazing that he was able to play while holding a lighted cigarette between his pinky and ring finger.  Here is the worded version of Manha De Carnaval in Portuguese sang by Elizete Cardoso.  This is another version with Luiz Bonfá playing guitar while Perry Como sang in English.

Những Ngày Tháng Ở Sevilla, Spain

Lần đâu tiên tôi bước chân tới Europe và cũng lần đâu tiên ghé qua Sevilla, Spain.  Người ta thường nghĩ tới Sevilla qua những giai điệu nhạc flamenco hay món ăn tapa của vùng này.  Trước khi tôi bước chân tới, tôi chỉ biết Sevilla qua nhạc flamenco nhưng ngoài nhạc flamenco, thành phố Sevilla còn nhiếu điều khác.

Earthquake and Lobster Sandwich

Food Truck

Well, I thought my last meal is a lobster sandwich from one of those food truck.  It’s not bad going out but I am still here, kicking and laughing.  My first earthquake experience and it was 5.8.  I was on top of the third floor building working.  Suddenly, it was shaking little and I thought it was a big truck driving by but then it was shaking more and harder.  Everyone in the office yelled out, earthquake, earthquake.  Earthquakes usually don’t occur in this part of the country but here in Washington DC metro, there is a 5.8 earthquake.  Damn!  Phone is not working, cell is not working yet facebook is working. :).  I guess voice and cell tower are out of service and only data is good.  So lot of facebook status is popping up all over facebook wall.

Lobster sandwich

Today I finally went to the food truck and got me a nice lobster sandwich.  Maybe a sign that I shouldn’t spend that kind of money for lunch. 🙂  Oh well, carpe diem.  2012 is coming?
